Junior Tour Fall Series V
Poppy Ridge GC
October 13-14, 2012
The Junior Tour of Northern California, sponsored by Capital Insurance Group (CIG), continued its 2012 season with Fall Series V at Poppy Ridge GC in Livermore, Calif. over the weekend. The JTNC’s second visit to Poppy Ridge GC in 2012 proved successful as three previous JTNC champions found the winner’s circle and a first time 2012 JTNC winner was celebrated.
In the Boys Championship Flight, Justin Suh continued his stellar play adding a second JTNC victory in the Fall Series. Suh, who won Fall Series III two weeks ago at San Ramon GC and took third place the following weekend at Greenhorn Creek GC, shot rounds of 69-68 for a 137 36-hole total. The San Jose resident was the only player across all flights to fire both rounds in the 60s, an impressive feat in itself. Coming in not far behind and alone in second place was Ryan Han of Hollister, putting together rounds of 71 and 68 to finish at 139. Taking third place after holding a share of the first round lead, with a four-under 68, was Adam Mistretta of Livermore. Mistretta’s game wasn’t as sharp for Sunday’s final round as he fired a two-over 74, finishing with a 142 total.
Casie Cathrea, who won the Girls Championship Flight of Summer Series I at Poppy Ridge GC earlier this year, settled for second place this time around as Alexandra Sborov of Pleasanton broke through with her first JTNC win in 2012. Sborov grabbed the first round lead after a three-under 69, edging out other competitive scores fired by the likes of Mabel Wong (70), Kathleen Scavo (71) and Amanjoty Sangha (72). Fading back only minimally in the final round with a one-under 71 to finish at a two-day total of 140, Sborov was able to fend off Cathrea, who fired a final round 69, to finish at 142. Tying for third were Scavo and Wong, who both finished at 143 one-under par, with Scavo being awarded the third place medal via a scorecard playoff.
Charles Osborne of Reno returned to the winner’s circle in the Boys First Flight, with his previous victory coming in April for Spring Series IV at Shadow Lakes GC. Osborne’s game modeled consistency as he fired back-to-back rounds of two-under par 70 to finish at 140. Aaron Chen of Fremont, who captured the first round lead after a three-under 69, dropped a few shots Sunday with a 75, to finish at an even-par 144. Joining him at an even-par 144 was Devrath Das of San Jose, who put together rounds of 70 and 74 to reach that mark. Through a scorecard playoff Chen was awarded the second place medal, while Das took home the bronze medal.
In the Girls First Flight, Kiran Sangha reversed roles with Bibilani Liu from their showdown two weeks ago during Fall Series III at San Ramon GC. This time Sangha got the better of Liu, taking first place with a 36-hole score of 148 after rounds of 72 and 76. With the win Sangha now has four JTNC titles in 2012 to her credit. Liu fired rounds of 79 and 73 to finish at 152 and alone in second. Taking third place after matching rounds of 78 to finish at 156 was Lydia Tsai of Palo Alto.
