Junior Tour Summer Series VI
July 30-31, 2012
The Junior Tour of Northern California returned to Stockton, Calif. for the third time in 2012, with Summer Series VI at Brookside CC. Not only was the weather hot, but some of the scores posted were too, including a nine-hole score out of this world.
In the boys championship flight, Will Brink of Manteca made seven birdies in his final nine holes for an extraordinary nine hole score of 29, 7-under par. Brink’s magical nine started with a birdie on the par-5 10th hole and continued with three straight birdies on holes 12-14. After a par on the 15th hole Brink closed with three more birdies on holes 16-18. His hot play allowed him to post a 5-under par 67 and catch first round co-leader Austin Weatherholt as both players finished at 138 forcing a sudden-death playoff.
In the playoff Brink won on the first playoff hole, the par-4 1st, after making yet another birdie. The 17-year-old started the tournament with an opening round of 71, 1-under par, one-shot off first round co-leaders Weatherholt and Ryan Han of Hollister, who both opened with rounds of 70, 2-under par. Weatherholt’s outstanding play in his final Junior Tour event—as he prepares to continue his golf career at the University of Pacific—shouldn’t be overlooked as he posted a final round of 68, 4-under par. The 18-year-old had a bogey free final round making birdies on Nos. 2, 7, 10 and 17. Coming in third place was Owen Lin of Cupertino, who followed his first round of even-par 72 with a 68, 4-under par. Lin made five birdies in the final round to finish at a 36-hole total of 140 and take third place outright.
The girls championship flight saw Hannah Sodersten of Fresno finish her Junior Tour career with a bang as she took a four-stroke victory. Sodersten, who will be moving on to play at Fresno State this fall, put together rounds of 70 and 72 to finish 36 holes at a 142 total. The 18-year-old converted seven birdies over two days of play and shot the low round of her flight both days. Finishing in second place was Paige Lee of Folsom, who put together consist rounds of 73 on Monday and Tuesday to finish at 146. Kathleen Scavo of Benicia took third after a final round of even-par 72. Scavo started the final round in fifth place after opening with a 76, but leapfrogged Monica Chen and Jessica Goldstein in Tuesday’s final round, finishing at 148, 4-over par.
Brendan Hy came away the boys first flight winner after a solid final round of 74, 2-over par. Hy began the final round tied with Saransh Saxena after both players carded an 18-hole score of 76, 4-over par. Saxena wasn’t able to match his play on Tuesday, but still was able to post a score of 79 to finish at 155 and take second place outright. Alan Chen of Fremont finished 36 holes at 157 with rounds 78 and 79 to earn third place.
In the girls first flight Kiran Sangha of San Mateo won her second event in a row. After winning at Poppy Hills GC last week Sangha continued her outstanding play at Brookside CC. Sangha posted a 36-hole score of 143, 1-under par. After opening with a 73, 1-over par, Sangha made five birdies in her final round to post a score of 70, 2-under par. Finishing in second place was Ashley Pan of Moraga at 161, after rounds of 83 and 78. Third place went to Ysabel Magat of Danville, who put together back-to-back days of 81 for a 162 total.
The Junior Tour concludes its summer series and the 2012 points season with the Junior Tour Championship at Mayacama GC in Santa Rosa, Calif. on August 13-14.
