Junior Tour Summer Series II
San Juan Oaks GC
June 27-28, 2012
The Junior Tour of Northern California, sponsored by Capital Insurance Group (CIG), held its second tournament of its Summer Series at San Juan Oaks GC in Hollister, Calif. and as usual some outstanding play was displayed. The girls’ divisions saw some familiar faces in the winners’ circle, while the boys’ division celebrated two new champions.
Hannah Suh of San Jose won the girls championship division with a 36-hole score of 144, 2-under par. Her back-to-back 72s on the par-73 layout for the girls’ divisions was good enough for an 11-stroke margin of victory over runner-up Hannah Sodersten of Fresno at 155. Finishing in a three-way tie for third at 160 were Alameda’s Samantha Moyal, Pleasanton’s Monique Riley and Monica Chen of Fremont. Moyal earned third place honors through a scorecard playoff with her rounds of 82 and 78. Suh had eight total birdies over the two days of play to earn her second victory of the year and the first in three months having previously won Spring Series I at Stockton GCC and Swenson Park GC.
Nicholas Noya of South San Francisco broke through with a final round 71 to win his first event of the season. Noya, who finished second in Spring Series IV at Shadow Lakes GC, posted a 144, even-par total to earn the top spot and mount a comeback. Noya started the day two shots off the lead, but made six birdies on the day, posting the second lowest score of the final round. The person with the lowest final round score belonged to second place finisher Brandon Taylor, who shot a 2-under par 70, which included six birdies and four bogeys. The Fresno resident finished with a two-day total of 146, 2-over par. Tying for third place at 147, 3-over par, were Fresno’s James Trevino and Austin Weatherholt of San Jose. Trevino earned third place honors through a scorecard playoff as he posted rounds of 75 and 72. His final round 72 included an ace on the par-3 16th hole, playing 142 yards.
Yealimi Noh of Pleasant Hill won her sixth Junior Tour event of the year in the Girls First Flight with a 36-hole score of 162. Noh shot a personal best 75 on Thursday to edge out Grace Chen of Sunnyvale by one shot. Chen finished at a 163 total, shooting rounds of 79 and 84. Coming in third place was Cupertino’s Bibilani Lui at 169.
The Boys First Flight saw some excellent scores, especially by winner Ryan Slater of Gilroy, who opened with a 5-under par 67 on Wednesday. Slater’s first round including six birdies and just one bogey, which he followed on Thursday with a 4-over par 76. However, his 143, 1-under par total was no runaway as Jensen Li of Sunnyvale finished just one stroke back at even-par 144. Li’s outstanding play was bolstered by a hole-in-one on the par-3 12th, which was playing to 146 yards. Finishing alone in third was Rashad Jaymes of Foster City, who posted a two-day total of 149 with rounds of 77 and 72.
Besides the holes-in-one by Trevino and Li, Girls Championship Flight participant Sadie Strain made her first ever hole-in-one on the par-3 16th on Wednesday, which was playing to 108 yards.
